After your recent car accident on California’s roads, you want to recover as quickly as possible. You feel the other driver bears responsibility for the incident, but you do not know what evidence to gather to build your case.

To help, News 9 offers tips for proving fault in a motor vehicle accident. Learn how to receive compensation for damages to your car and any injuries you sustained.

Look into local traffic laws

Research the traffic laws for the neighborhood where the incident occurred. Perhaps the car ran a stop sign or red light, or maybe speeding contributed to the accident.

Refer to your police report

Hopefully, you called the police to the scene of the crash. If so, you likely received a police report for your insurance claim. Hold on to that report, as you may use it as evidence to establish fault. Further, use the report to narrow down which traffic laws to research to support your case.

Gather supplemental evidence

Depending on the scene of the accident, surveillance cameras may have footage of the crash. Check with businesses near the site to see if they have security cameras that recorded the accident. If you have the driver’s name and contact information, search online to see if she or he has a history of traffic violations.

Take photographs

If you have yet to take your car to an auto repair shop, take several images of the damage your vehicle sustained. You may also have photos of the other driver’s damaged vehicle. After the accident, did you take photos of the weather, road conditions and traffic signs near the scene? If not, consider going back to the scene and snapping photos if you can do so safely.
