Speeding and pedestrian accident injuries

On Behalf of | Apr 8, 2024 | motor vehicle accidents

Speeding drivers pose a significant risk to pedestrians, leading to a higher likelihood of accidents and injuries. When drivers exceed the speed limit, they have less time to react to unexpected situations, such as pedestrians crossing the street.

It is vital for drivers and pedestrians to understand how speeding impacts pedestrian safety.

The consequences of speeding

Speeding is a major contributing factor to pedestrian injuries and fatalities. When a vehicle is traveling at high speeds, the impact of a collision with a pedestrian is much more severe. Pedestrians are more likely to suffer serious injuries, such as broken bones, head trauma or even death, when struck by a speeding vehicle. The faster a vehicle is traveling, the less time the driver has to stop or swerve to avoid hitting a pedestrian.

Speeding also reduces a driver’s ability to see and react to pedestrians in a timely manner. When a driver is speeding, their field of vision narrows, making it harder to spot pedestrians. This is especially true in low-light conditions or when pedestrians are not crossing at designated crosswalks.

Unpredictability and fear

In addition to the physical dangers of speeding, it also creates a sense of unpredictability on the roads. Pedestrians may feel less safe crossing the street or walking alongside traffic when they see vehicles speeding by. This can lead to increased anxiety and fear among pedestrians, impacting their ability to safely navigate their surroundings. Drivers should always obey the posted speed limits, especially in areas with high pedestrian traffic, such as school zones, residential neighborhoods and busy city streets.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention writes that almost 8,000 people died in pedestrian accidents during 2021. By raising awareness about the dangers of speeding drivers and promoting safe driving practices, drivers and pedestrians can work together to create safer streets and reduce the number of accidents and injuries caused by speeding.
